Set up in the year 1987 as MGM Grand Air, the airlines became famous as one of the most comfortable and expensive flights. But the year 1994 changed the scenario as MGM Grand Air started making huge losses. The airlines then changed hands to Front Page Tours. Later company had its base at Edina, Minnesota and provided flights to sports teams and their fans to major sporting events.

Thus in the year 1995, the name of the airlines was changed to Champion Air. By 1997 Minnesota Twins and Northwest Airlines took over the airlines from Front Page Tours. Then the base of the airline was shifted to Minneapolis, Minnesota and started sharing facilities as well as resources with the Northwest Airlines. Champion Air then was able to remove Sun Country airlines as the leading charter operator. The airline is presently owned by Champion Air Management.

The fleet of Champion Air includes 6 Boeing 727-200 Advanced Aircraft equipped with 56 Business Class Seating and 10 Boeing 727-200 Advanced Aircraft equipped with all Coach Class Seating.
